Applied Psychoanalytic Techniques in Therapy

Available until

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the core principles and practices of psychoanalytic therapy. Topics include what distinguishes therapy as “psychoanalytic,” how to begin treatment, and the foundations of Object Relations Theory. Students will also learn about Bion’s theory of containment, the dynamics of transference and countertransference, and how to use countertransference constructively in clinical work. The course explores different levels of psychological functioning—neurotic, borderline, and psychotic—along with self psychology as it relates to narcissistic vulnerabilities. In addition, participants will examine common countertransference reactions and develop skills for working effectively with resistance in the therapeutic process.
